NEIGHBORS GRID

NEIGHBORS

I live in a place called Sherwood Forest. Crazy name huh? We have some crazy street names too but no men in green tights, at least none that I've seen. The setting is sublime. Homes are nestled in among the trees of a forest. You can drive down one of the narrow roads and not even notice the houses. The community was begun in 1957 and is an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. There are 200 homes, 5 lakes, over 300 acres of preserved green space and more than 25 miles of trails. And we, the residents, operate and maintain it all. As you might imagine, this work ethic creates a strong sense of community. As beautiful as Sherwood Forest is, it's the people that make it truly special.

Most important thing you have done here?
I came here in a state of grief, so for me personally, the most important thing has been finding a home where I could begin life again among these amazing people, trees, plants, birds, mountains, lakes, fish…. You get the point. It’s the gestalt.
As far as SF activities, being chair of the garden committee is right up there. It’s a thrilling thing for me to share the garden space with with 30 or 40 other folks, some veteran gardeners and others newbies, each with their own visions and methods. And despite the usual challenges of human beings and plants, it’s a harmonious place to be.

I am quite in awe at how functional a community this is. Problems arise regularly of course, but in the last few years they seem to get solved with open, robust discussion and fine leadership.

Sue and I bought our home here, specifically impressed by the privacy that resulted from homes being closely enveloped within the magnificent forest, and the 5 lovely lakes. We knew nothing of the residents here who were to share our views, but were surprisingly treated to the warmth demonstrated by the people. It took all of 3 days to be invited to a dinner party of 14, hosted by Rick and Carolyn Mills. All were to be among the closest friends we had ever known.
